Sculptra

Sculptra is a type of dermal filler used in cosmetic procedures through injection. It contains poly-L-lactic acid, which stimulates collagen production, rejuvenating the skin and creating a more youthful appearance. In 2004, Sculptra received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treating lipoatrophy in HIV patients. Lipoatrophy causes fat loss in the face, leading to sunken cheeks and deep wrinkles. In 2014, the FDA approved Sculptra for cosmetic purposes, to treat facial wrinkles and create a more youthful appearance.

The main component of Sculptra is poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a collagen-stimulating substance that provides long-lasting effectiveness, helping to rejuvenate the skin and maintain results for up to 2 years.

When injected into the skin, the poly-L-lactic acid in Sculptra helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles by stimulating collagen regeneration. The result is softer and more youthful-looking skin.

The process of injecting Sculptra is typically performed in a doctor’s office, usually taking less than 1 hour. Before injection, the doctor will examine and mark the area to be injected, then sterilize the skin. To minimize discomfort, the doctor may apply a numbing cream to the injection site, and many doctors often mix Sculptra with lidocaine to further reduce pain. Most people do not feel pain or only feel mild discomfort during the injection process.

After injection, the doctor will massage the injection site to evenly distribute Sculptra, preventing the formation of lumps under the skin. You’ll also need to massage the treated area several times a day for a week after the injection. The doctor will instruct you on how to properly massage. Most people can return to work immediately after treatment.

Results from stimulating collagen production typically begin to appear around 3 months after the initial injection and reach maximum effect after about 4-6 months. Sculptra is also used to lift the buttocks, treat depressions in the skin, and improve body shape in various areas. However, Sculptra injections are not recommended for the areas around the eyes or lips.
